Ophiopogon japonicus, commonly known as mondo grass, is a low-growing, clump-forming perennial with strap-shaped dark green leaves forming dense tufts. In summer it produces small, bell-shaped violet-blue flowers near the base of the foliage, followed by black berries, creating subtle interest in damp soils and along pond margins.

This species is valuable for ground cover in wet areas and contributes to wetland biodiversity by providing shelter for small wildlife. Its clump-forming habit and tolerance of consistently moist or shallowly submerged soil make it ideal for pond edges, damp borders, and naturalistic water gardens.
